The Chrysler Building is considered an archetypal American Art Deco skyscraper. Designed in 1930 by William van Alen, the exterior of the building reflects the Chrysler automobile. The building is faced with Nirosta metal, which resembles platinum, and is decorated with sculptural ornaments similar to hood ornaments. The radiating curves on the building's dome mimic giant sunbeams, a popular Art Deco theme.
