Statue of Bishop Barrington
Statue of Bishop Barrington

Bishop Shute Barrington (1791-1826) was one of the outstanding bishops of his time. The last but one of the Prince Bishops, he was a man of generosity, the patron of architects, painters and men of letters and a friend of Sir Walter Scott. He founded one of the first Consumers' Co-operatives at his estate at Mongewell in Oxfordshire, and was a pioneer in agricultural development, both there and in Durham. A man of deep piety, he was greatly beloved in the diocese. His statue is a fine example of Chantrey's work.
