The author William Henry Scott on his travels documenting the people and culture of the Philippines first coined the term used to categorize the Architectural systems and styles in different areas. He separated them into two groups, based on geographical location. The first was classified as the Northern Strain, based in Luzon and was exemplified by the Kalinga tradition of architecture. The Southern Strain, based in the Visayas, was exemplified by the Ifuago, which best described the traditional architecture the first Filipinos that the islands lived in.
