This information classifies the architecture alphabetically. Each region has information on climate, topography, it's location, and description of the architecture. As I get information I will add to each section. I hope this will begin to get you familiar with the regions and styles of architecture in the Philippines.

  • The Bauko is located in the North Kankanay or Lepanto region.

  • The Bauko house is an enlarged Ifuago style house.
  • Almost three storeys in height, the roof is trapezoidal in shape to let out smoke from the cooking area inside the house.

  • The Ifuago style "bale" house is known as the traditional prototype and one that closely resembles the architecture found in Pre-Hispanic Philippines.

  • The Igorot house uses simple post and lintel construction with diagonal bracing, even on the roof frame.


  • The Isneg
     
    Before the building of an Isneg house, 4 posts are dug into the ground to form a rectangle. Ginger and "taxalingda" herbs are then placed in the center. Holes are then dug for the 6 "adixi", or roof-bearing posts. No work is done until the third day.
  • The roof of the Isneg house is bowed, like an upside down boat. This may be related to their boat-building tradition.
