The basic problem with English orthography is that there are too many orthographic options.

Spelling is difficult because many words do not even approximate the sounds being represented.

The 40 odd sounds in our language are represented with 26 letters c, x, and q duplicate the work of other letters.

The vowel A spells the vowel sounds for far, fare, lay, lap, and many. far, fer, ley, lap, meny.

Spel Ryt Rules

EI-IE write i before e except after c, or when pronounced like a as in weigh and neighbor. What are the exceptions. What does IE sound like?

When two vowels go walking the first does the talking. IE is the same as I, probably ai.

Words ending in Y preceded by a C usually change y to i before any suffix except those beginning in i.
Words ending in y preceded by a V do not change y to i.

The letter K is added to words ending in c before a suffix beginning with e, i, or y

When words of one sykllable and those with the accent on thelast sykllable end in a consonant preceded by a single vowel, double the consonant before adding a suffix beginning with a vowel. (as in beginning)
