| Brooks is the highest-selling solo artist in American music history and the quickest with sales of more than 95 million albums since 1989. He has won two Grammy Awards, 13 American Music Awards, 11 Country Music Association Awards, 16 Academy of Country Music Awards, 5 World Music Awards, 10 People's Choice Awards and a record 24 Billboard Music Awards. He started out in Oklahoma with a passion for javelin on the track, People's Jerome noted, "His (Garth's) dreams them were more likely about gold medals and the Olympics than gold records and the Opry." But he failed to make the Big Eight Conference finals in his senior year, so with his dreams of javelin dashed, he was forced to find out what really mattered in life: which turned out to be his music. After the release of his debut album, Garth Brooks because an overnight sensation. "There are lots of artists who can sing, but who can't impart the emotion and the personality that make an entertainer shine," country singer Reba McEntire said to People. "Garth pulls it off." From 1990 right through to today Garth's albums have hit the charts as bestsellers. Brooks admits that the enormity of his success has been quite a surprise to him. "I really don't have a clue why it happened to me," he said. Despite his stardom, Brooks remains down to earth surrounding himself in work and personal life with friends and family who know the real him before he hit the top... he claims "I surrounded myself with people who knew me long before I happened, so if I start acting different, man, they'll square me in a minute." The people he speaks of mainly are his lifelong friend Mick Weber (his road manager), old college roommate and partner Ty Englund (his guitarist), his sister Betsy (his bass player) and brother Kelly (who handles his tour financing and investments). Brooks insists on keeping his ego in check. "I'm still a bum, I'm no different. I hate to take out the trash and clean my room. Sandy (his wife) makes me do that stuff. I don't wake up and say, "I cannot believe I am in the middle of all this." I just wake up and say, "You're a bum, go do something worthwhile today." |
