Animal Totems
I believe that animals all have a message for us. That, similar to spirit guides, we have two which walk by our sides throughout this life, and another seven which guard and guide us in different aspects of our lives, in the seven directions - North, East, South, West, Above, Below and Within. We usually can get in touch with our animal guides through the same meditations of meeting our spirit guides... they can also show themselves to us through dreams, physical appearance and divination cards.

You can meet your animal totems but you cannot choose them, they will choose you. Many believe that they can just choose an animal and start communicating with it. Usually ego gets in the way at these times. The individual chooses the animal he or she believes to be most glamorous and powerful, rather than what is harmonious to the individual. The results are ineffective and often frustrating. No animal is worse than any other. Every animal's medicine (message, talent) is unique. You will find the greatest success in the animal that comes to you. Some people do however choose to work with a particular animal for a while to learn their medicine and to better their own life, this is quite all right, there isn't really any right or wrong in working with guides or totems, but generally these animals that the person chooses to work with will come into your life only briefly and when you've mastered their lesson, they move on.

Like spirit guides, I believe that animals can come in and out of our lives depending on the message we need to be told at the time. For eg. one day a squirrel decided to come in and deliver a message to me. It was a very interesting day for me and I love to just sit and watch the little guys now :-).

Every animal has a powerful spirit; this spirit may be its own or that of a being who uses the animal image to communicate messages of the world to humans. All animals have their special talents which can be observed when watching them go about their usual day... a study of its talents will reveal the kind of medicine, magick and power it can help you to develop in your own life. Generally, lifelong power animals are usually wild, not domesticated, animals.

Following is a little information on what each totem protects in each direction, and then some information on the animals' messages. Enjoy :-)
NORTH
The animal that gives wise council and reminds you when to speak and when to listen. It also reminds you to be grateful for every blessing, every day.
EAST
The animal that guides you to your greatest spiritual challenges and guards your path to illumination.
SOUTH
The animal that protects the child within and reminds you then to be humble and when to trust, so that innocence will be balanced in your personality.
WEST
The animal that leads you to your personal truth and inner answers. It also shows you the path to your goals.
ABOVE
The animal that teaches you to honour the Great Star Nation, and reminds you that you came from the stars and to the stars you shall return. This animal is also the guardian of the Dreamtime - for your personal access to the other dimensions.
BELOW
The animal that teaches you about inner Earth, and how to stay grounded and on the path.
WITHIN
The animal that teaches you how to find your heart's joy and how to be faithful to your personal truths. It is also the protector of your sacred space, that place that is yours alone and never shared except by invitation.
