Links in general are pretty cool. But when it comes to Lesbian and Gay links, it's even better! I mean, what better way to be visible in a sense, no? Anyhow, links wind up here because the sites belong to my friends, great in content, or just a lot of fun to go to. I also provide them as a courtesy because their site includes a link to this site.
Towards the bottom, I've also added links to non
Lesbian and Gay sites that are well worth visiting. For some sites
that I like a lot, I include a logo to the site, so my apologies for the
load time on this page. The courage this 11-year-old (yes, you got me right 11) has!!! I totally admire Sol's ability to speak so openly about her two mommies as well as their level of activism. Sol's Pages is a must see.
If you are new to the net, the concept of mailing lists might be unfamiliar. It's kind of like an ongoing discussion of whatever the topic is. W2W is strictly that. A list for us Lesbian folks.
Clair has done a wonderful job in putting a listing of sites that are of interest to women.
Audre Lorde is one of mine and Jackie's favorite authors. While I prefer her essays, Jackie enjoys her poetry. This is one woman who's presence we both miss.
One of my cool buds, Blklabj
Another of my cool buds
This is the link to her Fortune City Site. You can also get to her other pages from here Tina is the person who got me started with creating web pages (my first site is below). Her Humor Archive is awfully funny and this is where I got 98% of the humor for this site. Visit her often! :)
My other site and one of my first efforts at makin' a web page. Consists of humor, links, and some software
The life of a student. :D
Lesbian and Gay Search Engines
If you're looking for female friendly sites, look no further than femina
This site is extremely comprehensive in the number of sites that are actually active
Another site that leads you to more Lesbian and Gay sites
Artistic Sites If you never considered that animated gifs could be classified as art, think again. The owner of KarmaStorm, Steve Bennet, is a true artist. His works and thoughts are absolutely beautiful. Some of his stuff you can have for free.
Writers What would I do without my doses of Molly Ivins! She is a political columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram who finds the fun in politics. She has 3 books out now and they're ALL well worth reading, even if you're not into politics what so ever. Her stuff will have you laughing out loud while you're reading!!
Web Page Resources If you have any interests in making your own web site, these folks will steer you in the right direction. The animated graphic stuff that you find on The Gayly Wave wasn't made by me (not yet anyway!) so this is the reciprocal link that's required for using their stuff. Give those folks a visit and feel free to tell them that I sent you. You'll probably get a really strange look though! The Animation Factory is the source I use for the 3D animated gifs that you find here. Their stuff is really high quality and once I get to workin', I'll be using these folks to create a logo for me. Plus they're really, really nice!
This site has some really cool buttons! Plus he's got some tips on creating graphics using Photoshop and a number of resources for graphics.
Free Web Hosts I believe that while these folks use the word "free" they actually mean "barter". You get your space from these folks but you have to display your banners/pop-up windows in exchange for the space you get. Keep that in mind. Fortune City is the home of The Gayly Wave. But, there's some serious pros and cons to this place. A big pro is you get 10 mb of space. A con is that their reliability is a bit on the questionable side. If updating your site on a daily basis is an absolute necessity, don't go here. If you're like me and will update about once a week you're okay. But they're growing, just like Geocities was at one time so you have to have a lot of patience with them. The Ministers (I'm now one), the folks you contact on the boards, are absolutely wonderful though. They help out the best that they can and the employed staff actually does read the stuff the citizens write. So there's a lot of potential here, that's ultimately why I stay. The Lesbian and Gay community is starting to grow. It's worth considering. A lot of folks I know use them without a hitch. I tried them at first, but just didn't care for them. They were pretty unreachable (I could never get an answer from anybody there), but if that's not an issue with you, then go for it. They offer 11 mb of space and having a thriving Lesbian and Gay community. Now these folks offer 11 mb of web space. I've never used them, but considered it. The cool thing is that you can link your graphics from their site and it's not taken from your site allocation. They are associated with The Animation Factory and Parachat (a java based chat room like I have here) so they may prove to be a good host for you. No ads required at the moment (I honestly think this will change soon) but you do have to link to them. I have no idea what their Lesbian and Gay community is like. Don't groan. I find nothing wrong with using AOL (I have another website thru them). You get 2 mb of web space per screen name. Since you can have 5 per account, you can potentially have 10 mb of space there. The reason I didn't use them for The Gayly Wave is because you're restricted to 2 mb per name. That's a logistical nightmare for me since some of the waves collections exceed that limit. But they're easy to use if you're just starting out.
Making Web Pages You're gonna find that folks, just like any other subject, have an opinion on on what is the best to use, what is the best layout, what you need to do, etc......(kinda like the MAC/PC debate!) So my suggestion is to try everything! You are the best judge in terms of determining what is best for you. My suggestion [you knew that was coming! :) ] is to learn the basics of HTML (it's really not as hard as you think) and then pick an editor that suits you. I learned the basics from these folks when they were strictly on AOL. They've moved on since then, but still offer the HTML tutorials that I learned from. By no means is it comprehensive, but it's a GREAT start. They do have templates available for your use that include graphics. The folks there are really, really nice and helpful too! This is one of the HTML editors that use. The best part is that it's free! If you're a member of AOL you can use it to directly access your site. Even if you're not a member, it's a great tool if you're just starting out. It lets you edit in wysiwyg mode but can be a bit on the slow side if you've got a lot of tables and links. Still, overall it's worth the price! :) |
