Sparkys summary

The Train is actually a converted railcar that used to run between Katherine & Darwin & is now situated in one of the most beautiful tropical jungle garden settings around. The Mississippi Queen is the restaurant in the stilt house next door. The loud & charismatic owner, John Spellman is a Territory legend that anyone visiting the city should not miss out on encountering! Well, once, at least!

You can have a drink outside in the garden, on the decking, or around the pool table...or, you can drink inside with the comfort of velvet seats at tables, where gossip, intrigue, backgammon & chess are rife! Sometimes in the Wet Season as unbelievably loud thunder explodes overhead & everyone is crammed inside in fear for their lives, the power drops out, plunging the entire place into darkness.

Lit only by the strobe effect of violent lightning bursts mystery hands fondle unexpectedly... the screams of innocents fill the air. The Lounge section of the Train has been known to get a little raunchy on these occasions like this!

You can drink in the main bar where the witty banter can sometimes be overwhelming or in the driver's compartment, where you can have a go at driving the Train, watch the UFO fantasia lamp change colour, play with the driver' a dummy, who is currently dressed as a poor Bulgarian farm girl. The driver's cabin is O.K. if the juke box is getting a bit loud!

In the wet season the choice is more limited...Most people don't rock up to the Train until lOpm...things start late in the territory! Thursdays 10pm `til 11pm is a good time to pop in for a cheap drink & then stay, same with Friday, 12 Midnight until lam!! Every Dry Season Sunday from 6pm (more like 7pm) John presents “Twisted Fruit” in the Tropical garden, watch the native fauna cavort before your very eyes, whilst John knocks up a great BBQ and everyone enjoys the sounds of live music and sing along as the effervescent Allanah Average tinkles the ivories!

(Its worth seeing the garden in daylight, as you miss bits at night)

If the heat gets a bit much for you, or you need to relax more & have a brief rest  from drinking, you are free to jump into the Train's brand new spa/pool! This is usually a lot of fun with a few friends. No glasses in the pool, though, for obvious reasons. John asks PLEASE NO PINK BITS  in the pool!!!

At the recent Pride week Pool Party, everyone had so much fun that they didn't bother washing their make-up off before going for a revitalising dip
There is also  cheap accommodations in the form of air-conditioned rooms under the Mississippi Queen, or several caravans, phone him for the rates.
If you're coming to eat at the Mississippi Queen, you'll need to book in advance, not just turn up, if there's a large number of you, booking WELL in advance is a must!
