Beiteddine awaits pop legend Elton John's flamboyant touch
British pop icon Sir Elton John is scheduled to play at the Beiteddine festival on July 7. The flamboyant artist, who became known in the 1970s for his touching tunes, flashy hats, platform heels, outsize glasses and his wild rocking lifestyle, will perform alone on stage, accompanied only by his piano.
John, one of Britain's most successful rock artists along with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, was born as Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947 in Middlesex, which in his case couldn’t be a more appropriate place to be born. He started taking piano lessons at the age of four and graduated from the Royal Academy of Music before forming his first band in the early sixties.
His first successes only followed in the end of the 1960s after his meeting with Bernie Taupin, a then unknown writer from London. Together they would grow to be the most famous and successful duo in the world of pop. Elton John issued over 50 albums, including hits as Daniel, Crocodile Rock, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting, I’m Still Standing, Don't Go Breaking My Heart and, of course, Candle in the Wind (the best selling single of all time).
Following many a Walt Disney soundtrack, most notably The Lion King, he was given the honor to sing for some two billion people on Lady Di’s televised funeral. There will not be that many people this summer in Beiteddine but a sell out seems guaranteed with this pinball-piano-wizard.
Over the years, the festival in the Chouf has carved out quite a reputation for bringing world famous artists to Lebanon, including Placido Damingo, John McLaughlin, Jessye Norman and Fairouz. Like Joe Cocker last year, it seems Elton John will supply the pop element in Beiteddine’s menu. Another act that seems sure to perform seems the French musical troupe, the Notre Dame de Paris.
