Meet Miss Internet Lebanon
The arrival of the new millennium has brought with it the introduction of yet another beauty pageant, Internet Miss World, a title coinciding with the computer-age times. This year, Lebanon is participating in the virtual beauty-fest by sending 27-year-old Sabine Nahas.
Nahas was crowned Miss Internet in Lebanon and will be heading to Istanbul, Turkey to participate in the international event to take place on March 27. Competing against 40 other women from around the world, Nahas will be the only Arab contestant vying for the title.
A married mother of two, Nahas’ victory marks a new era in beauty pageants, which are widely criticized as being degrading and sexist against women. Lebanese model Haifa Wehbe was famously disqualified from the 1995 Miss MTV beauty pageant when they discovered she had been married with a young son.
“I am very happy to see that a married woman can win a beauty contest,” Nahas said after winning the title, adding, “my children enjoy seeing me on TV.”
Nahas was voted Lebanon’s internet beauty queen by the 145,000 visitors to the site during the four-month voting period. The contest, organized by actor Wassim Tabbara, attracted world-wide interest from countries as far-off as Canada, Mexico, Iceland and Hungary.
