Creating Papers![]() |

| Create a new image. File-> New, to experiment make it 250x250. Flood fill with a color that you like. When you find an effect that you think will make a good "paper", you can create a full sized image. |

Basic textured paper. Starting with the noise image, Effects-> Texture-> Texture. Most of the presets that come with PSP are pretty useless for our purposes because the tiles are far too small, creating a noticeable repeat. The exceptions are the presets that use a geometric type design. Load the Patchwork preset and hit the Proof button to see it on your image. Pretty ugly. Drag the Depth slider down from 40 to 5. Much better. If the resulting pattern is still too regular, add some more noise. You can also use the Warp brush in Noise mode at low Strength to mess up the regularity a bit. To make full use of the Texture filter, you will need to make or collect your own textures. Find things around the house to scan, look in your closet for clothes that are a solid color with a noticeable weave. You will probably spend quite a bit of time perfecting scanned textures, even if they are fairly large you will want to make them seamless. The best way to do this is to avoid the Seamless Tiling filter, instead use the Offset filter and the Clone tool to remove obvious seams. If you always make your layouts a certain size, you can avoid messing around with seamlessness by simply making sure that your texture is at least as large as your largest layout. You can also do a Google search to look for free textures, the term to use when searching is "bump map". As you make or find textures, save them as greyscale images to your Textures directory. |

Fine Leather filter. Starting again with another noise image, Effects-> Texture Effects-> Fine Leather. Load the More Cracks preset. NB: As of PSP 8.1, the Preview pane in this filter is still broken, do not trust the results of the preview pane, instead, use the Proof button to see the effect on your image. |

Mosaics Antique filter. This filter makes nice glitter. Start with a new image 35% Gaussian, Monochrome Noise. Run the Mosaics Antique filter with default settings. |

Brush Strokes filter. Starting again with another new image, add 35% Gaussian, Monochrome Noise. Effects-> Art Media Effects-> Brush Strokes. Try some of the settings that come with PSP. Try hitting the Randomize button and see what comes up. You can download the preset that I used to get the tile at left. Add 6-10% noise again to roughen up the effect. When using this filter, you generally want the swatch color in the dialog to be black, white or grey. Below left you can see the difference in using light colors. All three were made with the same preset, with the only change being the color of the lighting. |

Outside filters. Paint Engine is a must have freeware filter. Shown to the left are four samples of included presets. Each of these began with 35% noise. The filter also has a randomize button to help you create your own, unique presets. MuRa's Cloud filter is another must have, you will find it extremly useful in creating all kinds of texture effects. PhotoShop users will want to download it as well as the filter is much more powerful than PhotoShop's built in cloud filter. Redfield makes Lattice Composer and Jama 3D, both very useful in creating backgrounds. |
