The Birth of Gibbs Ink
by Mary Gibbs
In October of 2001, my first novel came out. While exciting, it also proved a
challenge. After all, I had to market my work - and myself. But professional
business cards and such are not cheap. I had virtually no budget for
materials. I'd have to do it myself.
A favorite, and cost effective, past time of mine has been the creation of
greeting cards. I use some of the great publishing software that is
available. With everything that the software could do, I had a great time
creating whatever I needed for marketing my book.
I soon realized just how time consuming it was to create the material, and
market the book on top of that. Especially with a family. I found that I had
little time to do what I really loved: Writing. This very topic came up in
one of the online writing groups I belong to. Authors like me had the same
basic complaint; no time to write while marketing, and very little money to
produce the material they needed.
Then it occurred to me. Why not offer to make the materials I made for myself
for others? Enter Gibbs Ink.
For my basic services, I chose business cards, fliers and brochures, as well
as scanning, book reviews and critiques, and media kits. All made to the
customer's specifications. Customers were welcome to be as involved in the
process as they wanted. The media kits included any information that the
customer wanted, as well as a mailing service. It saved them time at the post
office.
A favorite product became the window decals. Customers transform whatever
artwork they want into a window "cling" for their cars, offices or homes.
Bookmarks were added soon after. We're always trying to add new things to the
growing list of services. That's an important aspect of Gibbs Ink. The
willingness to explore and expand.
It quickly became necessary to expand the offerings further. Postcards,
magnets, stickers...the opportunities are limited only by the customer's
needs and wants. Now those customers include small businesses, organizations
and individuals. Anyone who wants to save money on quality advertising
materials with a personal touch.
