| William J. Rennie Expired suddenly at 9:30 on Thursday morning at his home on East Seventh street in this city. Although he had been ill for nearly six months, his end came suddenly and unexpectedly. Death resulted principally from the infirmities attending old age. He was 73 years and 2 days old. The burial was made in Cliff Cemetery yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with Masonic honors, he having been a member of that order for many years.
Mr. Rennie was born in Armagh County, Ireland, June 2 1835 and when a of 11 years landed in Boston, Massachussetts. He later removed to Providence, R.I., and came to Cannelton at the time of the cotton mills were in course of construction. He helped to place the first machinery in the mills. For many years he resided on a farm in this county near Mt. Pleasant, and later went to Kentucky. He returned here with his family to make his home last March a year ago. |
In 1866 he was married to Tereca Harp, of Oil township, and to them 10 children were born, of who six survive. The children are Mrs. Mollie Maier, of Clyde; Robert, of Paduca, Kentucky; Jessie of Golconda, Ill., Oscar of Ft. Wadsworth, N.Y.; Miss Marguerite and Everette, of this city.
Deceased was a veteran of the civil war and served his country in County D. 35th Infantry. He was severely wounded at Bargetown, Kentucky. Besides his family he is survived by two brothers, Samuel Rennie of Leopold and James of Kimmundy, Ill. Mr. Rennie was a great reader as long as his health and condition permitted he read constantly and kept in touch with all the happenings and doings of the country. He was fondly attached to his wife and children whose every aim was to see him comfortable in his declining days and by whom he will be greatly missed. |
