The Parents of Edmund Estes

20 July 1978

Thank you for your recent letter regarding Estes family genealogy. I was interested to note in your letter that you are descended from one Edmund Estes b. 1791 in Virginia, who married a Golding in North Carolina and eventually relocated to Illinois. Since you are interested in finding the parentage of this Edmund Estes, I strongly suggest as a starting point that you consider the possibility of your Edmund having been the son of Elisha, Sr. and Elizabeth Estes of Orange County, Virginia. Consider these points:

1. Edmund Estes, son of Elizabeth and Elisha Estes of Orange County, appears to have been about the age of your Edmund. Edmund of Orange had a sister Nancy, who married in 1816; a brother, Elisha Jr., who married in 1815; a brother John, who married in 1821; etc. The point to be noted is that your Edmund's marriage to Charlotty Golding in 1820 would seem a likely date for the marriage of Edmund of Orange.

2. The fact that your Edmund Estes married into the Golding family is most interesting. The Edmund Estes from Orange County, VA had a half first-cousin named Sarah Estes who married Robert Golding prior to 1772 in Orange Co. The Goldings and Esteses were neighbors. Don't be surprised if Charlotty Golding Estes turns out to have been your Edmund's next door neighbor in Virginia before eloping to North Carolina.

3. The Edmund Estes of Orange County, VA, did move away from Vriginia. I only know that he resided in Sumner County Tennessee, on August 27, 1835, on which date Edmund deeded to brother John his (Edmund's) interest in his deceased mother's estate in Orange County. (Or.Co. DB. 27. pp 376, 377) Did your Edmund tarry in Tennessee between his residence in N.C. in 1820 and his death in Illinois in 1962?

Please keep me posted on your future progress in researching the Estes family. With kind regards.

Mr. Stewart Estes Wood,
Genealogist.
