The Samuel Buchanan that died in 1802 (will enclosed had six sons and one daughter: Martha, Mathew, William (my ancestor), John, Andrew, Samuel, Issac, and Alexander. He came from Chester Co., PA in the late 1790s, and since he never secured land in WCV, his estate consisted of bonds payable over several years from the sale of land in Chester Co. PA. There were several Samuel Buchanans in WCV at this time so the records are tangled up; however, all the other Samuels are accounted for except his son Samuel, who was presumably born between 1780 and 1790.
Your James Buchanan lived very close to my 3rd great grandfather (Russell M. Buchanan) in Washington Co, VA. James and Rebecca were family no. 967 in the 1850 WCV census. Russell's family was #1106. William Buchanan who I take to be the brother of James lived just on the other side of Russell (family 1114). The 1860 census shows all families living in the Libery Hall P.O. area.
My ancestor William Russell's father married first to Sarah Ryburn in WCV in 1801, Andrew married in 1806, Matthew m. Sidney Hill in 1808, thus your Samuel (m. 1806) would fit with this family.
If this is indeed your Samuel scant information is known about him. As far as I know he doesn't show up in early WCV census, however, they are incomplete at best. There is a deed that has to be him that shows he bought land in WCV in 1813. He then had to move after James and William were married in the 1830's to TN, you can pick up his trail there.
If your Samuel does fit into this family, I have further informationon Samuel, his father. Samuel is found in the 1790 Chester Co., PA census (with six sons and one daughter). Samuel married Violet Porter in 1771 in Lancaster Co. He is married to her til 1793 (This is when my William and his brother brought land in WCV). This Samuel is the son of Mathew and Martha (?) Buchanan who lived in Chester Co., MAthew Sr. is the brother of Samuel Buchanan the progenitor of most of the Buchanan families in WCV.
Since Howard V. Jones has been on this trail much longer than I, I have enclosed his writeups (written before some information was found) on both Mathew Sr. and Samuel's family. Howard has pretty much read every source on these families, it is still inconclusive.
How interesting the story of one of the Buchanan boys sending money to a Miss Redman in Ireland. I wonder if that could be the Martha of Mathew (Mathew supposedly was born in Ireland and came with his father Samuel to PA - I know, too many Samuels and Mathews!) Mathew Sr. had to be born ca. 1710 Samuel his son ca 1740 d. 1803 Or could Miss Redman be a reference to Samuel's second wife Sara that dies 1813 in WCV. There are still many issues to clear up , but this should keep you thinking for awhile. If you have any questions concerning this material, please write back.
Sincerely,
Steve Dietz.
