Guadalupe

Guadalupe

I went on a cruise in the summer of 1997 with my best friend Peggy and her family. We sailed on the cruise ship Inspiration, part of the Carnival fleet. It was a seven-day cruise in the southeastern Caribbean, and we visited St. Thomas (US Virgin Islands), Guadalupe, Grenada, St. Lucia, and Santo Domingo. We flew from San Francisco International Airport to Atlanta, Georgia, where we took a transfer flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was a red eye flight, so we were all pretty dazed when we reached San Juan. It was unbelievably humid when we reached the ship at the dock. It seemed like we waited forever for everyone to arrive so we could board the ship and check in.

The inside of the boat, when they finally let us in, was breathtaking. It's about thirteen stories high, and the central portion consists of restaurants, shops, night clubs, and the casino. The Promenade deck was lined on one side with windows and cushioned window seats, allowing you to just sit and stare out into the watery horizon. Guadalupe was the second island we visited, and it's mainly French speaking. Peggy and I decided to take a guided tour, so we boarded a bus and headed for the rain forest. They dropped us off there, and we walked for about 30 minutes before we caught sight of the waterfall. We crossed a small suspension bridge to get there, and everyone stopped to take photos. I took this picture while standing on that bridge. It took about 2 minutes more to walk to the base of the waterfall. The water formed a pool, and we were allowed to swim in the water. Peggy and I were so tired, we just sat on the rocks at the base and enjoyed the feeling of the mist on our faces. It was a magical day. :)
