Pre-War Profession Graduated West Point 1839, Seminole war, served in California during the Mexican war, participated in the capture
of John Brown.
War Service 1861 Capt. in 3rd US Artillery, September 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, defences of Washington, Dranesville,
May 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Divn/Dist. of Jackson at Corinth, Hatchie (w), commanded XIII Corps
in Vicksburg campaign, served in the Dist. of the Gulf, commanded XVIII Corps at Ft Harrison, commanded the Army of the James and
Dept of North Carolina after Butler left.
Post War Career Army service commanding various departments, retired 1881.
