Captured Sword belonging to Capt. Edward Buchwalter

This is a captured Confederate Nashville Plow Works Sword that belonged to Capt. Edward Buchwalter, 114th OVI. Capt Buchwalter transfered to the 3rd Mississippi Volunteers De Afrique on June 27th, 1863, and was promoted from Sgt. to Lieutenant in the Mississippi Regiment. In the line of duty, Capt. Buchwalter and his men captured a unit of Confederate soldiers. The Confederate Officer, rather than surrender his sword to a former group of slaves, broke the blade. Capt. Buchwalter's men recovered the pieces and had it remounted by a sutler using 1822 French parts and keeping the Confederate guard. His men presented it to Capt. Buchwalter following the repair . He served after the war helping the freed blacks to settle on prior confederate property. The 3rd Regiment Corp De Afrique was the first free black volunteer unit in the south. This item and many others from the Buchwalter collection, were donated to the Yonkers N.Y. GAR. The items remained in the GAR Museum until it was closed in the early 1950's. The sword retains it's original museum tag, bearing the Yonkers GAR seal. Capt. Buchwalter's personal papers, letters, and the sword were then sold into private collections. This sword was sold on the ebay auction in June of 1999. It's current whereabouts and owner are unknown.
