Mr. A. K. Shaifer
Port Gibson, Mississippi
My dear friend,
I'm looking through some old papers. I came across the enclosed description of the Siege and defense of Blakely which ended on the 9th of April, just fifty years ago, and thinking you might be interested in knowing how the fellows on the outside felt at that time. I am sending it to you. I do so much hope that you are still improving and that you will soon be able to get around as you used to. The day here is an exact counterpart of the one at Blakely fifty years ago, bright and clear, but that day was Sunday and the temperature about the same as it is here today. Please keep me informed as to how you are getting and as to matters and things generally. We are all well. With fond regards to Mrs. Shaifer, and all your friends anb with many hopes for your speedy restoration to health.
Your friend,
M. A. Sweetman
