Dear friend
I accept this the first opportunity of writing you according to promise.
On last Wednesday as was arranged all our party accepting Capt's
Y Garvey), with the addition of Capt's Moffet + Jones + Lts.Wallace + Bain
met at Columbus for the purpose of presenting to the State os Ohio the colors
of the 120th O.V.I. From the letter knowledge we had of Gov. Brough none
of us were looking for a very hearty welcome but we are not altogether prepared
for the very cool reception extended to the colors. The friction of ease and comfort exhibited by his excellency - the Gov. was in strong contrast with many scenes
through which they had passed.
I did not see the records of the Adj. Gen. myself but was informed by Lt. Wallace
that on Tuesday the commissions for the 114th O.V.I. had been forwarded to the
Reg't and that among them was a 1st Lts. for you. As Wallace holds a 1st Lts.
commish of much earlier date than yours it may be the cause of some trouble to
you in getting mustered unless you arewith the Reg't before he is. His time will be
out by the 27th of this month when he will likely return.
Your Friend
(M or W) Hughes.
