Barunga Festival, 2004.

The Barunga Aboriginal Community is about 80 km south east of Katherine. The Queen's Birthday long weekend is the time for the Barunga Cultural and Sports Festival. As soon as I saw pictures of this festival on T.V. (a couple of years ago?) I decided to go one day. This Festival celebrated "Culture... Not Grog" so that was another good reason to go. I spent two days/one night at the Festival - didn't see much of the sport but the cultural activities were wonderful and there were lots of people to talk to. Many people were overseas tourists who had a go at the spear throwing, didjeridu making (& playing) and dance workshops. We also had the opportunity to taste bush tucker - barramundi, catfish, kangaroo tails and damper.
