Barunga Cultural Activities

What good fun! Many fit, young overseas men had a go at the spear throwing with mixed results. Sometimes the woomera followed the spear (it's supposed to stay in your hand) and the kangaroo target was perfectly safe. Some quick lessons kept the woomera in hand but the kangaroo was still safe (not so the "sacred dog", a pig and the audience who were instructed to stand well back!) Then it was time for the experts - the elders who have obviously hunted kangaroo and not come home empty-handed. It was a joy to see the spear quivering thought the air and the kangaroo took a couple of direct hits. The dance workshops were good fun too. The young girls painted up the participants with white clay and Yilila supplied the music and expertise. It's not as easy as it looks to dance the rhythms!
