A Furphy
Apparently an indispensible part of early Outback
life was the Furphy metal water tank. These tanks were also used
in Gallipoli to bring water to Australian troops. With the watermen
came news and stories, sometimes not entirely true - tall stories.
Hence the word "furphy" was coined. The tank makers
were apparently keen on propaganda. Hence the stork motif and
the exhortion to produce and populate or perish. There was also
a warning about the evils of alcohol. To save space this propaganda
was written in Pitman's shorthand.
