Miyajima Shopping

When I bought some postcards, I was fascinated to watch the man do the adding up on his "soroban". When he saw my interest, he proceded to give me a lesson not just in addition but in subtraction too! He then wrote "soroban" on the paper bag in "Hiragana "and "Kangi" for me.

And there were lots of cat figurines. They are called "maneki neko" and got their name because they sit with one paw raised and bent which is the traditional Japanese beckoning gesture. Most "maneki neko" have left paws raised and this gesture invites customers or visitors. When the right paw is raised, it brings wealth and good fortune. When both paws are raised, you are being greedy!
