Women's Business
Once the kangaroos and fish are hunted and brought
back to camp, it's time for the cooking which is done in pits
with hot stones and ashes. The kangaroo tails are wrapped in Alfoil
and the damper is cooked on a plate over a fire. Girls prepared
the kangaroo tails and damper for the tourists. I'm ashamed to
say that due to visions of Skippy hopping around my head, I was
totally unable to eat my pieces of kangaroo tail and fed them
to a passing dog which was most grateful .... though the damper
was good. One young woman had visions of a whole lot of tailless
kangaroos hopping around but an old fella assured us that the
other parts of the kangaroos were "all gone - good tucker".
There were arts & crafts exhibitions and a photographic
exhibition at the Community Education Centre. Aboriginal culture
does not allow photos of people who have died so it was sad to
see group photos with black spots over the faces of people who
have died.
Girls also painted up the tourists for their dancing
lessons. They put white clay onto arms, legs and faces. I was
hoping to avoid the face painting but a girl insisted that I had
to be properly "painted up" for corroboree - face too!
