If there is an interest in what Gene Clark was like in high school, I would like to convey my personal perception. Please understand that it was many years ago and I have only my impressions, but I believe they are accurate.

We were friends for a few months prior to his graduation and I had the privilege to know him and have many talks with him. We attended several state music competitions that spring and I'm sure he must have won first place in some of them. I'll never forget the afternoon that he sang a solo for the girl's glee club. He was tremendous!  How I wish he would have recorded that.

Gene was a genuine,  sincere guy who went to school full time and worked after school to earn a little money - and there was his ever-growing interest in music.  His dream was to become a recording star and he cut a few demo's during that period.  He didn't have many friends in school because he was so driven toward his future. As a matter of  fact,  he said I was his only friend...... perhaps that was true for those few months.

No particular incidents come to mind,  but his warm eyes and tender soul are remembered.  He was kind,  gentle,  quiet and a loner.  I don't think his classmates really understood him, including me.   I remember feeling a little sorry for him and I'm not sure why - maybe it was because he seemed to live for only the future.  I didn't understand then……
