The A&R operates from Aberdeen, North Carolina to Fayetteville and River Terminal, 46.9 miles. Interchange is made with CSX at Aberdeen and Fayetteville, Norfolk Southern at Fayetteville and Laurinburg & Southern at Raeford. The A&R connects with the Aberdeen, Carolina & Western in Aberdeen, though they do not interchange with one another. Rail is 70 to 100 pound. Traffic consists of around 4,500 cars of coal, chemicals, lumber, paper, scrap and general commodities.

The company was incorporated on June 22, 1892 and the railroad was opened from Aberdeen to Raeford in 1898, to Hope Mills in 1903, and to Fayetteville in 1912. Additionally, a branch from Raeford to Wagram was built sometime before 1909 and sold to the Lauringburg & Southern Railroad in 1921.

Regular passenger service ended in 1951. The Blue family interests control the company.

Aberdeen & Rockfish operates the Pee Dee River Railway in South Carolina as a division. The Dunn-Erwin in North Carolina was also operated by the A&R but was recently abandoned.

Freight cars: 27 boxcars, 25 gondolas and at least two cabooses.

The gentleman who wrote the Kalmbach Publishing book American Shortline Railway Guide is president of the A&R. One would think it is safe to assume that all the information for this line (and the line under its control) is correct.
