The L&C bought twenty 40 foot box cars in the early 1950s and numbered them in the 1000 series. In the last years of their service, they were used between the Springs plants on line. When Springs finally stopped using their own railroad almost completely (save
for the coal shipments to Grace) the 40 footers found themselves out of a job. Most
were scrapped. Two were sent to the South Carolina Railroad Museum in Winnsboro. #1011 is now coupled to this one, as I type this in early April 2001. This one, #1013,
was repained in the mid-90s and placed near the old interchange with Norfolk Southern across from the depot in downtown Lancaster. (Joseph C. Hinson)
