The 200-series GPs were painted in the L&S red and white and looked real attractive. The last appearance of these units on Yadkin Valley rails was sometime in the summer of '99. They were replaced by the standard G&O scheme. It should be noted again that the YVR roster is included as a piece of history more than anything as everything listed has since been replaced by bigger horsepower equipment.

L&S leased the following units from the City of Saltville (VA) for operation on the Saltville Railroad (1981-91):

SW1 101 (1/47 4479) built for Olin-Mathieson; lettered Saltville Railroad

GE 25 ton 102 (10/50 30818) built for Olin-Mathieson; lettered Saltville Railroad

L&S also operated the following lines:

Fairmont & Western Railroad (Fairmont-Elrod, NC)
Began: 7/84 – Ended: 1988 – Fate: Tracks dismantled 1989

Nash County Railroad (Rocky Mount-Spring Hope, NC)
Began: 11/85 – Sold (2/28/94) to Gulf & Ohio Railways

Pinning down an exact and current roster for the Laurinburg & Southern is not easy. When Pete Claussen came calling with his bank account, the locomotive leasing end of the L&S went to Johnson Rail Services out of Georgia. Kerr's 2000 edition of Locomotive Rosters and Notes, for example, lists only SW9 #138 and G&O SW1500s 9525 and 9528 on the roster. However, you have all of these odd locos, from GE 25 tonners to 70 tonners to two different types of Alcos in and around Laurinburg still in LRS paint and lettering.

At some point, maybe I'll come back and differentiate everything.

Also, the roster is somewhat dated. It comes from the Diesel Era article from late 1997 (“Laurinburg & Southern” by the Diesel Era Staff from Diesel Era Volume 9 Number 1) and was sent to me by Rick Smearcheck from Carolina Rails via snail mail when I could not find my own copy of the article. I've updated what I can from personal knowledge. For example, Alco S2 #131 was listed then as being at the CP&L plant in Skyland. Since then, it has turned up back at Laurinburg. SW1 #133 was also listed as being leased out, but it is in Laurinburg now as well.

The bottom line is that this roster will certainly have some mistakes in it. I invite you to correct me -- or add to what I have -- at jchinson@infoave.net.
